AppleCare question

D received a MacBook for graduation.

I am looking into buying AppleCare for her, and notice that Amazon sells some for substantially less than the list price that are “code only” - no box.

Any comments on the advisability of a code-only purchase?

the box doesn’t have anything you need.
The license entitles you to the coverage.
The Cd in the box ( or the one they used to include) has an outdated version of a utility- you will need something more updated/powerful than that anyway.

We bought AppleCare at a local Apple Store this January/February. There is no CD in it – just some seemingly useless papers. I think as long as Apple’s AppleCare system has a record of it, you sould be fine.

Yeah, you just need a record of it and the serial number of the macbook. DD has apple care. Twice we have had to use the service. First time Apple sent me a fedex box, I sent the computer back to them, they fixed and sent back to me. Second time they had me take it to an authorized apple center. I brought all the paperwork but the guy just dumped the macbook serial number in his computer and we were good to go.

If you want AppleCare, you should probably buy it straight from the Apple website. There are no discs involved. It’s a matter of registering your serial number.

Thanks to you all - I may risk buying the boxless version. From what I have read, it is worth it.

Its well worth it. I live at the Genius bar it seems and its all covered under it.

As an update - I ordered the discounted, “boxless” AppleCare from an outside vendor at Amazon.com, and got an e-mail containing instructions and the code to enter on the Apple website. I went through the process, and everything seemed to work just fine.
