My daughter and I have throughly examined the website and found 2 places that say the deadline for the Common App & the Supplement is Dec 1 and we found 2 places that say it is Jan 1. We plan to call them Monday, but that does not leave her much time if in fact the deadline is Dec 1. Does anyone know what it really is? She is auditioning in the school of Drama for Musical Theatre/Theatre. Also if it is Dec 1, is everything due that day including the counselor and teacher forms?

For the College of Fine Arts, in which the Dept. of Drama is located, the deadline is DECEMBER 1. I AM POSITIVE. I have students who are applicants this year and some who have applied in the past.

Typically, with any college (this is not specific to CMU), while it is crucial that the applicant gets their own application in by the deadline, there is a little leeway if the counselor and teacher recs arrive shortly after the deadline. However, a file is not considered complete until everything is in. But what matters when it comes to making the deadline is that the student’s own part of the application is in on time. I suggest for certain that your daughter’s own app is filed on time, and that you arrange for all her recs to arrive as soon as possible after that, if they have not already been sent.

Just to show you, Regular Decision for FINE ARTS is December 1 if you look at this page on the Admissions site for CMU. While Jan. 1 is the deadline for other schools within CMU, it is not for the College of Fine Arts (Drama is in that college):

[Admission > Application Plans](<a href=“Home - Computing Services - Office of the CIO - Carnegie Mellon University”>Home - Computing Services - Office of the CIO - Carnegie Mellon University)

As well, here again it is December 1 for the College of Fine Arts:

<a href=“Home - Computing Services - Office of the CIO - Carnegie Mellon University”>Home - Computing Services - Office of the CIO - Carnegie Mellon University;

Thanks for the info.

This is where it says Jan 1 and yes it does say for people in the School of Drama – see page 4 and page 10: http://www.cmu.edu/admission/forms/10/CFA_Requirements.pdf

That is why we are confused. We saw the Dec 1 deadlines on the website as well.

I see the confusion in that document. On the other hand, on the first page of that document, it mentions December 1 for Regular Decision, including for DRAMA.

Now, their own document has contradicting information on it!

Their website has December 1 and then the first page of that document also has Dec. 1. I know my students are applying by Dec. 1 this year as in the past. If I were your D, I’d have everything ready to go by that date, even though you can call and check on Monday. I would not start the supplemental essay the night before it is due.

I also want to direct you to the Common App Supplement (application) for CMU. RIGHT ON THE APP SUPPLEMENT, it says:

</www.cmu.edu>

Here is the link to the pdf of the Common App Supplement for CMU:

http://www.cmu.edu/admission/forms/10/CM_Supplement.pdf

In summary, the admissions website has Dec. 1 for Drama as does the actual application, as does the first page of the “requirements” document you linked to. Where the confusion lies is in subsequent pages on the document you found, it gives Jan. 1 for Fine Arts/Drama but in my mind, that is a big mistake on their part, as everywhere else it says Dec. 1, including the actual application.

Obviously, call to check. As I advise applicants pursuing Acting and Musical Theater and have had students in past years apply to CMU, as well as have one student applying there this year, all have used the Dec. 1 deadline.

I have also found another document on CMU’s site with all the information to apply as freshmen applicants. In several places on this document, it ALSO mentions Dec. 1 as the deadline for Drama and all other majors in Fine Arts:

http://www.cmu.edu/admission/forms/10/Apply_Freshman.pdf

I found yet another place where Dec. 1 is mentioned for the RD deadline for all majors in the College of Fine Arts:

http://www.cmu.edu/admission/forms/10/App_Checklist.pdf

What this indicates to me is that Dec. 1 is mentioned in about 8 places that I can find on the site and on the app and on various documents that they link to. The ONLY places where it says Jan. 1 for Drama are on two pages in the document you linked to even though it mentions Dec. 1 for Drama on the first page of that document. This leads me to believe that CMU has a MAJOR mistake in two places on that ONE document (as Dec. 1 is mentioned in far more places). That is really too bad! Yikes! However, not to knock CMU (after all, my own kid applied), I am not surprised, as they made mistakes with her app process and with others that I know as well and that has been a pattern, even though the program itself is top notch!!!

We had also understood that the application deadline was January 1, then found the pages that showed December 1 and got my daughter’s application in a few days ago - before the deadline.

What is critical to note, however, is that there are currently NO audition dates for MT open in any location. All of them are completely booked. CMU is willing to accept your application (since it is still before the deadline) - and very, very willing indeed to take the associated fee, of course! - but it will not be considered because you cannot audition!

When I called to ask about this, all she said was to check back a couple of times a day because sometimes people cancel. At this point (or, apparently, within the last week if not longer), however, submitting an application to CMU’s MT program is basically nothing more than making a $60 donation to the university. There are terms used to describe this . . .

I got an audition in Pittsburgh yesterday by calling for cancellations. If you don’t have one… don’t give up! It pays to be persistent.
