Application Disaster!- (Not for me, for my sister)

Well I have a twin sister and we’re both applying to schools this year. (Me through arts and sciences/architecture and she through nursing). She applied to around 8 schools:

Georgetown- E.D
Michigan- E.A
Northeastern-E.A
Rutgers-E.A
Delaware-E.A
Villanova- E.A
Maryland- E.A

These are her stats

Minority- (Hispanic)
Female
3.6 GPA (unweighted) 3.9 weighted
1800 SAT
690 SAT II Spanish, 650 SAT 11 English
In honors classes
AMAZING essays, great recs

Now she had gotten deferred, from every school except for Maryland and Delaware (she hasn’t heard from them yet). And my family has been trying to comprehend how in the world this could happen. I mean Georgetown was kinda a given and maybe michigan, but Northeastern! What do you think is happening, and does she have a shot of getting in RD from any of these schools!?!?

EA , at least in schools I know, is sometimes the top 5% of the applicant pool.

I’m sure you’ve seen the 2010 profile for Northeastern.

http://www.northeastern.edu/admissions/apply/profile.html

Wouldn’t she be near the 25th percentile?

Northeastern was more competitive than in the past this year, and the nursing program is more selective than the school as a whole.

A deferral, most certainly, is not a rejection.

Did she get into rutgers

She actually hasn’t heard from them yet ( I got into Arts and Sciences New Brunswick and Cook College). But from what she saw during an open house, she probably won’t get in :frowning:
They take only 20 applicants out of over 500+. What should she do?

What is her CR/ M SAT score?

A deferral certainly does NOT mean pending rejection… it means that the schools would like to asses her application with the applicants in the RD applicant pool. She may, however want to add a few safety school applications to her list before the upcoming deadlines… from what I understand Nursing is a more competitive major than some others at certain schools.

What are some of your in-state schools with nursing programs? One of them may be a safety for her?

Ok the thing is, her grades aren’t amazing, her SATs aren’t amazing. Amazing essays, I believe can make up for one aspect of the application that isn’t amazing, not a whole average application.

I think she got a 580 Mat and a 650 reading (something around that). Well since we live in NJ, rutgers is the big state school, which she applied to. But the thing is that supposedly their nursing program is extremely competitive( like the pharmacy and dental schools). Shes applying to Seton Hall, Rhode Island, Loyola Chicago, UNC Chapel Hill (both Nursing and Arts and Sciences), Quinnipiac, and Scranton. But the thing is that she doesn’t like any of these schools…

answer to everything—lack of ap classes.
surprised that URM status didn’t help out more.

"surprised that URM status didn’t help out more. '

^Word to the wise! Same thing happened with my son, but we were not so surprised.

its funny because my parents heard from the friend of an admissions representative from michigan that because this was the first year they had done the common app, they were overwhelmed with apps and only decided to pick the “superstars” from the EA round and defer everyone else. But what they had realized after the round was that they didn’t have enough diversity. Do you think this would be any help for her?

It is not the end of the world. If ultimately the situation is not in your favor, your sister can take a gap year and apply again next fall.

It would have been to apply to at least one college on regular decision.

*It would have been wise

My mistake.

The list of colleges see applied to with seton hall n such she will get into those.

yea, i just think that if she had applied to michigan as LAS, she probably would have gotten in… what do you thinK? She says the reason the didnt was because you cant transfer into the nursing program (I personally think thats not true)

She should get into Rutgers and Delaware, probably not Maryland.

Im just shocked, is she that weak of an applicant? Even though I have a 3.8 unweighted average, I only have a 25 ACT and I got into better schools (UPitt, Wisconsin). So even though she has a higher standardized test score and lower gpa, we kinda balance each other out, no?

I think that the fact she did not take AP classes and her SAT score might have affected her chances. Nursing programs are getting very competitive these days. I really hope she applied to some safeties because none of those schools seem like they can be safeties to her, but rather high matches and reaches.

My sister(who is 20 now) had high stats than your sister, and she got rejected from many, many places. now she is at hunter college.

Did she do well in all of her bio, chem, physics, psychology courses?

well shes taking psych now and doing pretty well, not AP because they dont offer it at her school, and she only took bio and chem. Shes also taking anatomy honors, which shes also doing pretty well in.
