Application Essay Questions

“Briefly discuss an activity or organization that you have participated in, or are currently participating in, outside of your own cultural group.”

Any tips for this? I come from a small mainly white town, and all my volunteering is with my church. The closest thing outside of my cultural group is routinely helping out at a senior home. Can anyone help me out, or explain this better? Thanks  xx

For that, I discussed my volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. Your volunteering at a senior home would be great to talk about!! How has volunteering there changed your perception of things? What will you take away from that experience? Write about things of that nature  Best of luck!

Race is such a small part of “cultural group.” Pretty much this question is asking - has there ever been a time where you have learned something about a different group of people, or been put into an unfamiliar situation or completely different environment than what you are used to. Whether it is age, race, hometown, economic class etc. there are many cultural groups that you are a part of. In general, MSU wants to see that you are curious about the things around you and want to learn more (hence what university is for) whether it is about new academic subjects, languages, people, foreign “cultures” as people typically think of it, etc. Do your best to reflect that in your essay in a personal way.
