Application Essay

I plan to apply to CS LSA. When I look at the CS web page, it says B.S. CS is offered through the college of L&S, the program is administered by CSE in CoE. Michigan has an essay question that asks: Describe the unique qualities that attract you to the specific undergraduate College or School (including preferred admission and dual degree programs) to which you are applying at the University of Michigan. How would that curriculum support your interests?
Should I write about L&S or CoE?

Write about the program you are applying to. If you need clarity then call or ask your AO. Good luck.

I interpret the prompt to be asking, why are you applying to CS-LSA and not CS-CoE, perhaps with the intention to weed out those who think that LSA is a side door for getting a CS degree from the University of Michigan.

What are the differences in the course and administrative requirements for a BS degree in Computer Science granted through CoE and LSA? Does the LSA pathway require more non-STEM courses for its students? Does the LSA pathway allow for additional time before a potential CS student can or must declare CS as the major? If so, are you appreciative of this opportunity and flexibility to explore and learn outside of your intended major? The LSA pathway might be suitable for those CS majors who would want to acquire substantive knowledge in say, linguistics or philosophy, which are very useful to advance the field of CS-artificial intelligence, for example.

There only major differences are that you get a BS from LSA and a BSE from CoE as well as needing 8 more credits than LSA. Everything else is identical. CoE can also take any LSA elective and vice versa.
