Application Question

My friend Volunteered for 2 hours at her church and now she wants to check off the church volunteer tab on her online college application. Is she allowed to? It does not specify the time??

bump…

No time? I think that’s pushing it a bit far. Sure, she could probably get away with it. But being a church-going person, she should know better.

Is she allowed to check it off or not since she did do it…

bump…

Inform: What would you advise your friend? You don’t seem to have a clear cut view of it. Personally, I think 2 hours is next to nothing. I think volunteering shows at least some ongoing commmitment (childcare, serving the poor, etc.) Two hours to me means manning some table for sign ups. Be real. Where’s the integrity? Or even better, encourage your friend to really find the benefits of really volunteering rather than some item on a college app. There are things more valuable than how one looks to others.

I know that I do not have a clear cut view? I just want to know if she can check it off or not…?

and she did not man the tables she actually helped people

I assume you’re just asking for rationale behind a yes or no answer because surely, no one can give you an absolute straight answer. All we can offer is opinions.

But how about this: your friend’s interviewer happens to be a minister. “Oh, it says you’ve been a church volunteer. Can you tell me about it? What did youlike about it?” What’s your friend gonna say? Quibble some more?

Don’t do it. I don’t mean to downplay her real efforts but 2 hrs isn’t much at all. If that’s all it takes for her conscience to be clear in order to gain an advantage – well so be it. But it’s a bad path to begin stepping down…

Sure, she could check it off. It is true. It’s also not likely to make any difference in terms of whether she’s accepted or rejected unless – as T26E4 suggests, she has an interview that counts for admission and she’s asked to describe her church volunteer experience. Her claiming credit for such trivial experience will make the rest of her application seem suspect. And if she tries to lie in the interview, she’ll probably look like a liar.

I don’t think the school she is applying to gives interviews… I just asking… If she checks it off and they find out she only did it for 2 hours will she be in trouble… or not ?
