How much impact does being on probation have?

I’m not sure. What schools are you applying to?

deerfield, taft, lville, hotckiss, choate, sps, and milton

i just got on probation for a marijuana incident which i did not partake in, it is clear on my app that my tests came back negative. but it says on my app that i was put on probation for involvement, not smoking

Yaaaa, thats gunna look bad. Make you look like you hang around with the crowd and you just happen not to be hittin at the time. Well thats what it sounds like to me atleast lol

well, do you think it would help if i were to write a sort of emotional essay on my app that conveys sort of what I learned and how I felt?

Ummmm… I think it will impact your chances. I hate to brake it to you.

It’s a deal breaker for the most competitive schools. You may want to submit a letter along with your application telling your side of the story, rather than just letting it say on your app that you are/were on probation for a drug-related offense.

Sure that probably will help a little bit.

GemmaV what schools are you applying to?

isn’t lville known for being a drug school?

Idk, but I think they do drugs while the teachers aren’t around. Most probably start when they’re at the school. Either way it isn’t good for your future.

Yes, all your school essays should have one pathetic sounding one about drugs + a letter explaining stuff. I mean, it sounds like you just got lucky on that drug test.

what do you mean, mpicz?

Make sure u center a well written essay around that incident, becuase from admissions standpoint it sounds like you just happen NOT to be smoking then. And it owuld be risky letting you into an environment when you can go downtown and smoke whenever you want.

lol bballadict9345, even if Lawrenceville is known for being a druggy school, I don’t think it’s because the adcom wants it to be that way

TomTheCat: thank you for saying that. Seeing that question made me want to tear my hair out.

I see it has been addressed but XXX Inner City Public school may be known for being a drug school and XXX Prep school may be known for being a drug school. I doubt the director of admissions at either would want you any more because of your (not blaming you, but it stands as it is) “wealth” of cannabis.

As for what you do… You did not really provide us information on your EC, SSAT, Etc (chancing threads are a waste for the most part anyway even with correct information) but be rest assured with something like a probation you would need a stellar application; reason being all the top schools can fill their ranks with amazing students and you need to show why you stand out.

On your interview basically reiterate what they say in the hand book, in your own words. They like to see that (Make sure not to sound like you have studied what to say etc. though).

You said something about being emotional etc. Don’t be yourself. In the letter you send them to explain what happened be courteous but FRANK. FRANK. Just give them the facts, and don’t say sorry for what you did and say sorry for inconvenience.

Assuming you are applying to HADES, Milton, etc keep a safety school because you may not have done it but the admissions director will take it as:
-You hang out with druggies
-You are a druggy who just was not high at the time
-Bad influence
-etc
-etc

So even if that is not the truth know that the guys have someone better (THERE IS ALWAYS SOMEONE BETTER THAN US whether we got a 99 on the SSAT or a 20) and they will not hesitate in saying no; not worth the risk to the name they have harbored since 17xx.

Gemmav I know you are very experienced with this stuff, I am kind of Blind leading Blind but if you see something wrong with this please feel free to comment; this is what I would do.

yeah, i agree. i think you should definitely try to explain what happened during your interview and also a letter. all of the schools on your list are very competitive, and with this on your record, i think you should consider some safety schools.

good luck to you! =]

well I had like an 83 on my ssat, I have mostly all A’s.
i play three varsity sports as a sophomore in high school (2 i played on freshman year)
i’m involved with the chess club and various others
and i have received numerous awards for grades

so, rao95: i have already had my interviews (and this happened after all of them). do you suggest that I use it for a topic on my apps (like a time I stumbled etc.) and send a letter explaining what happened being frank?

Did you have to explain your probation at the interviews?
