application to selective program/transfer application

My daughter is applying to a selective major at her current school. It has a relatively low acceptance rate, so she applied to transfer to other schools as a back up and has been accepted at them. However, she would rather stay at her current school. She has to put a deposit down on a transfer school before she receives her decision from her current school. Do you think that her current school can see whether she has applied to other schools and will that affect her current school’s decision (she had to submit transcript requests)? If she puts down a deposit on another school, will that school notify her current school? She would like to keep her options open.

NO

“will that affect her current school’s decision”

Not impossible, but unlikely. At most universities, applications to a selective major are handled by the academic department at issue, not by the admissions office, and not by the registrar who sent out the transcripts. IMHO, a student so committed to a major that she’s willing to transfer looks good, not bad, to the major department at the home university. But chances are that the decision makers will neither know nor care that she has been accepted elsewhere. They just want the best group of juniors in business/nursing/whatever that they can get.
