APPLICATIONS GROWTH Class of 2013

The silence from Columbia is deafening. Which are the other notable colleges and universities that usually disclose this data but have not yet done so? Why do you think they’re withholding this year’s data?

Carnegie Mellon apps +12.1%

I calculated that growth number from info in these two reports:
original apps #'s story: [Freshman applications up 9 percent at CMU](http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/09018/942691-298.stm)
updated count: [Feb. 9: Carnegie Mellon Receives Record Number of Undergraduate Applications - Carnegie Mellon University](http://www.cmu.edu/news/archive/2009/February/feb9_applicationrecord.shtml)

However, that first report puts last year’s apps at 20,315, quite a large variance from last year’s CMU CDS apps # of 13,527 for 1st years. Anyone have a clue here, or what am I missing? I can’t believe transfers, if in the 20k number, would account for over 6,000 apps. Might they be counting grad apps? [But that second report characterizes the apps as ‘undergraduate.’]…if so, this wouldn’t seem too kosher. Maybe they are somehow factoring in their Qatar campus, which may not be counted on their CDS? At a loss here…

here’s last year’s CDS:

Shows the stanford overall acceptance rate will drop to 7.5% and may the lowest in the country.

for those interested in Ithaca for next year, according to that article papachicken posted, ED will be returning…

“Any word on Wash U in St Louis?”…fwiw, they didn’t even release numbers in a good economy…

On Carnegie-Mellon could they possibly be counting each school a student applied to within the university as an application. For example, my D listed four different programs on her application.

more on Tufts…

we heard earlier that RD apps were estimated down ~4%, but nothing completely official yet about total apps. [ [Tufts Daily - Tufts sees 12 percent rise in ED1 acceptances](http://www.tuftsdaily.com/tufts_sees_12_percent_rise_in_ed1_acceptances) ]

Here’s a recent report on ED1 + ED2 stats (but total number of ED1 + ED2 apps not provided, just how many were accepted…standard Tufts opacity!):
[Tufts Daily - Tufts accepts most ED applicants since 2003](http://www.tuftsdaily.com/1.1576877-1.1576877)

Last year SC did not post application numbers until August 2008. I recall because I needed them for a report. For the last few years SC has had increasing numbers of applicants. For the freshman class entering in 2007 SC had 33,760 applicants for a targeted class of about 2600. In the fall 2973 enrolled according to the class profile on the website.
For the 2008 incoming class 35,901 applied and 2744 enrolled in the fall. These numbers are posted on the website now in the admissions section.
In a recent speech, Dr. Sample announced international applicants were up 10% and graduate applicants were up 10% for 2009. A provost spoke to parents at a meeting and remarked applications were up. Student aid budget was increased 8% this year.
I really do not expect firm numbers until August 2009.

Last month I asked the Asst. Dean at top tier LAC info session if their RD applications experienced a decrease due to the economy - I think he was a little put out by my question. He said that they were not quite sure… yet… but like many of their peer schools they expected maybe a slight decrease. ( I’m guessing it was more than a bit)
