Applications to C.U. Stagnate as Growth Continues at Other Ivy Schools

<p>I don’t see it as a big deal and I don’t believe it reflects poorly on Cornell. </p>

Fred Hargadon, former dean of admissions at Princeton and Stanford, doubts that more and more applicants make for a stronger class. “I couldn’t pick a better class out of 30,000 applicants than out of 15,000,” he says. “I’d just end up rejecting multiples of the same kid.”

“It’s like needing a new stereo and buying the whole Radio Shack,” says Mark Speyer, director of college counseling at the Columbia Grammar and Preparatory School in New York. “With these bigger pools, colleges are getting a lot of students who have no chance.”

<p>Also, I may be wrong, but I do believe this is still a record number of applications for Cornell. They just didn’t grow 32% year-over-year.</p>

Columbia University Inundated With Applications From Barely Motivated Students … Congrats, Columbia — now you get to sift through the applications of 10,000 high school students who are only interested in attending your esteemed institution if it doesn’t involve completing some extra paperwork. Real go-getters, that bunch.
