Applied Physics at Harvard

How is studying materials science through the applied physics program at Harvard seen to academics compared to studying the subject at a top engineering school (Berkeley, Caltech, or Stanford, to be specific)?

Is applied physics lumped together more with engineering (where Harvard is lagging) or the sciences (where Harvard is top-notch)?

I was looking through former students of applied physics at Harvard today, and was shocked to see a significant portion of my favorite professors at other (top) schools on the list. Almost all of them studied under one of two professors I am very interested in.
