Applying as a math major without a rec from a math teacher

I am applying as a math major to Brown but I will not send a recommendation from a math teacher. I’ve taken many courses in math and I’m currently taking linear alegbra. I also have perfect test scores in math. I felt that my teachers in other subjects would give me better recs so I didn’t ask my math teacher for a rec. I know that both of the recs I will be sending will be great but I am worried that there might be a problem due to the fact that I am not sending a rec from a math teacher. Is this a serious problem?

I don’t think so. I would want one of your recs to be from a “math related” subject. (Physics, chem, even econ.) and hopefully that teacher would speak to your mathematical aptitude. Sometimes, too the guidance counselor letter will excerpt comments from your math teachers if they know they are writing in that direction. In some schools, the math teachers might not be the best letter writers! Schools also expect that there is a strong chance that a student may have other interests, and won’t always follow the intended concentration they think they will in high school. (I knew someone who was sure she wanted to major in atmospheric science and is now an English prof.)

Ok good. I got a rec letter from my chemistry teacher who knows that I am good at math.

You don’t apply to a particular major at Brown, you apply to Brown (unless it’s PLME or the RISD/Brown dual program). You might be expressing interest, but majors and interests change so much over the course of your time at school. Some applicants submit art portfolios (again, unless it’s RISD/Brown) of one type or another, but even then it’s just as an added dimension. Your rec letters should come from the teachers who know you best and with whom you have the best relationships.

Hi Franglish, what do you mean by “some applicants submit art portfolios unless it’s RISD/Brown?” I’m applying to the Brown-RISD dual degree program, and I sent Brown my art supplement as well. Was that a bad idea…?

Incase franglish doesn’t see your post I will respond in his or her place.

When he or she said, “unless it’s RISD/BROWN”, it is because for the Brown-RISD program it is mandatory to submit an art portfolio. For all other applicants it is voluntary to submit an art portfolio.

By sending in the art supplement you did what you were supposed to do, so you have nothing to worry about!

Just for the OP to be at ease a bit, I applied as a math major with 3 recs – 1 from my Freshman/Junior year English teacher, one from my Junior/Senior year Chem teacher, and one from my Senior year English/TOK teacher and was accepted. Good Luck!!
