Applying as an 11th grader

So I found out about CC a few days ago by a friend, and being on here seeing people chancing other people makes me so afraid because the people I’ve seen look WAAAAAYYY more qualified than I do, and that makes me scared because if they’re worried, do I even have a chance?
I’m an international student (Nigerian) applying for Financial Aid on all of my schools, which I wouldn’t do if I had any other choice. And M9/10 is so close by. I just want to know if applying as an 11th grader internationally, and on Financial Aid with a twin affects my chances by a HUGE amount

Yes.

@Autumnal I agree with skieurope, but to elaborate–the majority of schools have VERY LITTLE space for new 11th graders in general, and therefore they have less aid for those students and also use those spots to fill institutional necessities. For example, (School X really wants to focus on athletes, in particular they need a strong soccer player to improve their school or School Y has a brand new theater opening up so they are looking to expand their theater program as fast as possible). Furthermore, depending on the schools you have applied to, school will also reserve spots for legacy students whose parents may be in desperate need for a boarding school due to job changes, family situations, etc. While it is late, it wouldn’t hurt to consider changing the applications to repeat 10th grade as several schools I know of (Loomis, Taft, Peddie, NMH, Mercersburg, Lawrenceville, Choate, etc.) give MOST of their 11th grade spots to repeat students anyway. If you contact the admissions office, they may be able to move you to the 10th grade applicant pool, however, with decisions going out in a week.

IF YOU ARE DEAD SET ON ATTENDING BOARDING SCHOOL, I would look at schools with rolling admissions deadlines and call up admissions offices asking if they will still accept an app for repeat 10th grade. Because if you applied to those “top” schools without much of a hook your chances are incredibly low. A link to TABS schools with Rolling admissions is placed below:

Of course, there is still a chance you get in because ultimately no one on this forum is an AO and we do not have your application in hand so there is always the possibility of getting accepted, but I would look for backups ASAP.

Although I agree with what everyone has previously said, don’t get freaked out by chances threads. They’re not exactly the most accurate source of information.

@CC4life, thank you so much for all the information about this, I’ll try to see what I can do about rolling admissions.

@autumnl I also feel you. Im also applying from Nigeria to grade 11. I was also afraid of the competition for 11th grade so I applied to two schools for a 10th grade spot just in case. I would like to know how many schools you’re applying to if that’s okay. I was you good luck in your admissions. All the best
