Applying for jobs out of state or abroad after graduation.

Hello!

I’m a soon to be new graduate this December, and I’m hoping to leave California and work either work out of state or abroad. I just don’t know how to go about applying.

I understand that most new graduate to aspire to go to such places are qualified when they graduate. However, I’ve taken in the past few years to really invest into developing my resume and skillset into one that might stand out. Such as
Studying: Mechanical engineering (coding focus), business management (finance focus), and foreign language
Studied abroad: HK and Tokyo
Research projects: 3 major projects in 3 countries
Multiple internships (abroad and domestic)
Awards: Tau Beta Pi, Scholar, etc
Etc

Overall, I have focused on developing quantitive skills to be paired with my experiences abroad and in the business fields in hopes of really standing out. I would like to go into investment research, and eventually moving into companies such as DRW and Citadel. Meaning, being very niche and focused on utilizing my quantitative and analytical skills.
I am looking to leave CA (NYC, Chicago, or Austin/Dallas) or East Asia: HK, Shanghai, or Tokyo.

Only issue is, I’ve been told that only students from places like Stanford, Berkeley, Michigan, etc have any real chance of moving after graduation. I personally don’t believe that because I’ve competed with/against those students and have stood on my own. I firmly believe its what you do with the opportunity given.

Is there any advice you might have for me?
How should apply?
Where should look to?
Etc

Thank you.

Sincerely.

(PS if can find a way to show you my resume, I will but it’s my first time posting on this)

People without college degrees move states all the time. It is certainly possible for someone with a degree from a non-elite school to move to another state. You may not secure a job that covers all your relocation expenses, but you can absolutely move to a different state.

Go about applying the way you would for any other job in California. In your cover letter, you can say that you are planning to move to [city] for personal reasons in the next few months - a little line that signals to the employer your desire to move away from where you currently live.

Thank you so much! I will restructure my approach.
