Applying to med in July '10, should I join AMSA?

I need advice on what I should do EC wise…
I have no volunteering hr in med field yet, no research experience either. Im hoping to get into one of the two summer internships for this summer which I applied to.

Does joining AMSA look good on Application?
I’m a sophomore, and I didnt realize till now that we have to apply to med school like a yr before it starts… (end of junior year…)
I’ve got 2 and a half semesters + 1 summer to study for MCATs and to build a EC resume…

what should my priorities be or not be?

Thanks for all advice.

Don’t join AMSA. It’s a waste of time for a pre-med. If you join because you think it’ll impress an adcom, don’t bother. (On the odd chance that your university’s pre-med AMSA people are really active and actually do things, than it might be worthwhile.)

As a medical student it may be worth your while - I joined as a first-year to get a free Netter’s and discounts for Step 1 prep.

nah, im not joining to get benefits and our AMSA group is active, though active in a way which doesnt affect me…

i was thinking that would it impress the adcom…lol

Why would joining a club impress anyone?

absolutely don’t join AMSA, its a complete waste of time

i was also a late bloomer in terms of ECs in college…i had no ECs freshman year and only got started january of sophomore year. i think if i had applied at the end of junior year i would have presented a very weak application as far as ECs…my advice is take your time! you don’t have to apply junior year and if you don’t want to be scrambling to get ECs and the MCAT done in the next year and 3 months then don’t! take a year or two off and make sure you present the best application possible the first time around!

thanx, I won’t join AMSA then…
I’ll find other EC’s… im volunteerin at the library now…
I’ll start volunteering the hospital this summer…
hopefully, ill get a summer research internship or into a research at my university
and i need to shadow a physician - but I don’t know how I’ll go about finding a physician to shadow!

Ask your local hospital if they have some sort of shadowing program. Alternatively, you could talk to physicians you know to see if they will let you shadow them or if they know of other physicians who would let you. Worst comes to worst, you could cold-call doctors who you think are doing interesting things to ask.

thanx…
i’ll ask my dad’s doc… even though i wanna be a doc… i dont even have a doc for myself…haha… i havent been to a yearly physical chec up in 5 yrs!.. hmm my insurace is being wasted… o well…

well, i’ll try my local hospital (CMC) too

if that doesnt work out, ill just open up a directory and start calling…
