I’m going to be applying to multiple internships/REU’s for next summer, and I was wondering what the etiquette for holding acceptances is. I am applying to the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory which (I am assuming) is a reach and is my top choice, and want to apply for a couple of other ones that I would like to attend in the event that I am not accepted for that. Can I hold acceptances to other internships/REU’s while I wait to hear back from the Applied Physics Lab?

They usually give you a short time frame with which to reply back, though sometimes you can get them to extend it by a little bit if you should hear back from another one within a reasonable time frame.
