Applying Undeclared at UCs

I wanted to apply as a Design & Media Arts major at UCLA, but I’ve heard the admissions rate is about 10% for that specific major, and I’m afraid my portfolio isn’t very strong. If I apply undeclared, would I have a better chance of getting into UCLA? Would applying undeclared hurt my application?

If you apply undeclared to UCLA you will have a better chance of getting in. To UCLA, that is. Take a look at the website for design media arts. They say that they will only consider UCLA students for a change of major if they have extra space. I wouldn’t bet on that happening, and even if there are a few seats I expect the competition is quite rigorous. It’s too bad you waited until the last minute, or you could have called them and asked for more information on the likelihood of changing majors.

I think you have a tough decision to wrestle with.

Thanks so much for your input mikemac. I decided to do choose the DMA major - I’d rather get rejected from design versus attending UCLA and not being able to major in design.
