Applying Undeclared Engineering or specific engineering major (Biomedical engineering)

Hello Everyone! I’m a rising senior going through college applications and I am possibly interested in Biomedical engineering on the Pre-Med track. That being said, I am still interested in exploring other fields of engineering, and am considering applying undeclared engineering. I was just wondering If there could be negative consequences applying undeclared engineering vs a more specific major. Will applying as BME increase my chances of getting into the engineering programs? If I apply undeclared, will I be unable to get into the major of my choosing once I decide?
I have a 3.82 weighted GPA, 5.69/6 weighted GPA, 1510 SAT.
I am interested in applying to…
-CU Boulder
-Clemson
-Georgia Tech
-Virginia Tech
-JMU
-U of Utah
-Tulane
-Syracuse
-Northeastern
-Purdue
-OSU

I can at least speak for Purdue that all freshman start out in a general first year engineering curriculum and then transition to their major at the end of freshman year. There are minimum GPA requirements.

I believe VA Tech and GA Tech have similar first year programs but hopefully someone will correct me if I’m mistaken.

You usually need to declare your top 2 major preferences.

This depends completely on the school. You have to look to see if either a specific major or undeclared are options. Some schools require you to state a major. Some, like Purdue, don’t allow it. Some fall in the middle. Rather than undeclared, General might be an option. Some schools have that option and allow students to switch out once they have a better idea what they want to do.

Also, at schools where you may be admitted either directly to the major or as undeclared, you need to check whether declaring the major after enrolling as undeclared is difficult (e.g. high college GPA needed or competitive admission). Getting into the school may not be very useful if you are unable to get into your desired major.
