Essay:
For the majority of my youth I believed I would become a detective or a police officer in the future. The television mostly influenced this decision; in shows, police officers and detectives captured “bad guys,” officially named criminals, and helped society. It was not until the first year of my high school life that I realized this was only a shallow dream. The harsh reality of these occupations made me quickly yield and begin to search for a new future career.

During my pursuit, the field of medicine came to me through my mother’s past career as a bed-side nurse and her current career as a case manager for West Houston Methodist Hospital. The sterilized scent, the chilled air, and the warm-hearted workers of the hospital put me into a state of bliss. Through this connection, my yet-to-be realized lifetime goal began to form. I explored the different fields, although only a superficial expedition, and gradually realized my interest in the medical field.

My passion for medicine intensified during the summer of my sophomore year. A letter came in the mail that would change my life. This life-changing letter gave me an opportunity to go to Washington D.C. for a week-long medical program. I decided to embark on the program in Georgetown University believe to would help me find my future career. There were astounding lectures of the medicine, fascinating dissections of the human body, and an enjoyable tour of the John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. The lectures of the professors and physicians sucked in the world of medicine and saw all of its interesting subjects: the intricacy of the human body, the processes that preserve the life of human, and the causes that cease the life of a human. The dissections sparked my interest in plunging into the human body. My curiosity grew during the experience; I found myself wanting to gain more knowledge in the field.

Furthermore, a group of students, during my junior year, formed the Pre-Med Society – a club focused on the fields of medicine. Through this club I had listened to local speakers, each a respected practitioner of their field in the Texas Medical Center. While listening to the speakers talk, I found areas I was not interested in: orthopedics, pediatrics, and gastroenterology. I was able to narrow down my interests to radiology and surgery; I wanted to touch and go into the body and physically repair problems found in it. My future goal became more visible through this club.

Academically, I chose courses that increased my knowledge in the medical field. Through Health Science, I learned the general functions of each system and the effects of disease on the human body. Anatomy and Physiology thoroughly taught me the structure, location, and function of every single body part. AP Biology informed me of the human body on a molecular level. These high school courses prepared me with information that is vital to college courses of my desired profession.

As my goal is coming closer, my desire to achieve it is becoming stronger. These events, courses, opportunities helped shape my lifetime goal. The sudden realization of my future transformed into the fuel of my motivation to be educated beyond college education and become a physician.
