Appropriate dress for vocal auditions

What is appropriate dress for vocal auditions? Are dress jeans an blazer appropriate?

artspeak, for vocal auditions I would not wear jeans in any case. Either wear a suit or nice dress slacks with a button up shirt and maybe a sweater or sports jacket/blazer. Make sure you wear nice shoes. In VP things tend to be a bit more formal. I am assuming you a a guy, make sure you shave and have a nice hair cut. Good Luck!

She is a girl- D. So more formal is appropriate- thanks

artspeak,

Dress for Jazz and contemporary music programs tends to be less formal than for classical auditions. Give us an idea of the schools and programs involved and chances are that someone on this forum will have direct experience there.

The Wolf Trap Opera Blog has a very good outline of what singers should wear. They have auditioned thousands of singers and know what works and what doesn’t. Here’s the link:

If she is auditioning for vocal jazz, that outfit the OP suggested would be appropriate. If for classical, that would be not dressy enough. Definitely go through the links that the Dad’s are suggesting, as there is much more detail on options for classical outfits for young ladies.

She had the audition yesterday and seemed to be dressed quite appropriately and the audition went very well! Thanks for the last minute advice, although it caused some last-minute drama here.

I remember my son’s USC audition day included many different genres milling about in one area, so we had the opportunity to see classical (voice and instrumental) students as well as jazz.

The students that stood out in “not a good way” were the girls dressed in formal performance wear (sequins, spaghetti straps, chiffon, etc.) and the young men in tuxedos. The way they glanced around at their professionally-dressed/audition-appropriate peers, they seemed to know they had gone over the top.

Hopefully, this will provide a helpful visual for those of you still planning your outfits (although everyone here seems so well informed, I can’t imagine you’d go overboard).
