Appropriate to contact professor?

Registration time is drawing near, and I’m working on my schedule. There’s a class I’d really like to take that fulfills a requirement and requires no prerequisites (but is outside my dept.). It’s a class on sports media. Thing is, I’m only interested in sports media because, well, I am sports media (I report on two sports!). But I don’t report on conventional sports (read: not basketball, football, soccer, hockey, baseball, etc.), and I’m concerned from the looks of the syllabus that the class skews towards these sports and I won’t get to spend any time applying my knowledge of sports to this class–instead, I’ll be expected to cover more “mainstream” sports in class assignments (like papers) or the like.

Would it be inappropriate of me to contact the professor of the class and explain my situation to him (obviously, slightly more detailed than this account!) and ask whether or not my area of expertise is relevant to the class?

It would not be inappropriate at all! If I were you, I would probably do the same thing! I’m sure the professor will be more than understanding and would happily answer your questions.

I say go for it…what have you got to lose? From my experience, most college professors are very accomodating and understanding, so there shouldn’t be a problem. :)
