April 2012 Math Discussion

@flyingeagle yes, if you pick any two angles in a parallel cut by transversal diagram they are either congruent or supplementary. When i read the question i was expecting them to pick vertical angles as an answer choice (which would NOT mean that the lines were necessarily parallel)

@pr022x okay thanks i think i got it right then wooo

Does any one remember question 50? I put K.

@Quickerthanswift what was the question about

I think it was the one with 2 sq 10 with a possible answer. That’s all I can remember.

for the one with Centers: (-3,3) and (-3,-3)
what letter was that?

i don’t remember it

Okay this one has been annoying me. Number 35. Triangle ABC and CDE are similar. The perimeter of triangle ABC is 20. The ratio from triangle ABC to CDE is 2/3. What is the perimeter of CDE?

a.13
b.25
c.30
d.45
e.50

I’m not so sure those were the exact answer choice but I know I’m close. The ratio should end up with perimeter of 13 and 1/3 though shouldn’t it?

nope, 2 to 3 means abc is smaller. for every 2 units on triangle abc, there was 3 units on the corresponding part of def.
20 perimiter, divided by 2, multiplied by 3.
The answer was 30.

I knew the answer was either 13 and 1/3 or 30. I just picked the wrong one then.

Any time you see a ratio question just write it down as fractions in the order they state them (unless they specifically mention which is bigger or smaller). Then it’s easy to solve:

ABC / CDE = 2 / 3

and 13 1/3 wasn’t a choice…

I think I did pretty good on the math, but i don’t think i did good on like maybe the problems with Jason’s patio or something. I can’t remember the question… but it asked about his patio and some thickness was like 6? and the area was 270 and a side was 18? I got 108 for one of the answers but i don’t know if that’s right, and the other one asked what is the other length of the side of his patio that doesn’t touch his house or something? I put 51

About the patio question
-The volume was 135 (A=270, h=6 inches)
-270/18=15, so the amount not touching was 18+18+15=51

51 sounds right. 2*18 + 270/18 = 51

The first question was about volume, so it was just area * thickness or 270 * .5

the 6 inch one was 135, then there was one about how much would it cost, i dont remember the answer but u just had to plug 270 into the equation they gave, and the last one was the perimeter not touching his house which was 18+18+15=51

I made so many dumb mistakes… T.T
Anyone have an idea of what -4 might translate to on the scale out of 36?

Does anybody remember #50? It was a parabola and part of it was shaded in, and it asked which inequality was right… The answers all had 2 equations with ys greater than/less than…i put K

@purple1995 That’s what I put. =D However, it was a lucky guess.

I don’t remember the choices but the answer was in this form (the numbers are made up)

x^2 - 5 < y < -2x + 5

the shaded area was above the parabola and below the line.
