April 4th List of Questions/Answers

This thread is to compile all the questions answers that have been discussed on this forum. I will organize by sections, and also add little commentary to some of the questions on how to solve or other discussions about them. Any question with a (?) next to it means that the answer has not been confirmed by a majority.

Math:
Cube in sphere : 2sq.root3. Had to find diagonal of square, then the diagonal of cube, then divide by half for radius.

Log 5(5 13/2) : between 6 and 7. The 5s cancel out leaving 13/2 which is 6.5

Volume of cylinder Ans: 180pi. Radius was 6, therefore circle area was 36pi, then times 5 for volume.

W and Z exponent problem : 2. Only 2 solutions that summed 5 worked. 3 and 2, 2 and 3

Period of Sine graph: pi. Just look at the graph, don’t always assume period is 2pi

Distance of houses: 56/57 (not sure of exact answer). I used coordinate plan to estimate answer, but could have used distance formula.

Clock minute hand: 105, circumference of circle was 10pi, had to rotate 3 times to go from 2:10 to 5:30, and then an extra 1/3pi, which is 33.3pi, or 105.

Rocket Launchpad distance: 30 + 20sqroot3 + 20sqroot2. Used formula for 30-60-90 and 45-45-90 to find distance.

sin of tan -7/24 : 7/25. tan = sin/cos, and sin is pos in quad 2.

geometric sequence : a3bc4d. times a and c each time

Rational/Irrational : (?). I haven’t seen any majority answer this one. No one remembers that exact question and choices.

Ratio of intersecting lines with triangle: 1:1. It asked for ratio of line segment to segment, not the triangles

External angle : 130 degrees. isoceles triangle with 25 degrees each side, equals 50 total, and the external angle + 50 equaled 180 cause it was a straight line.

rectangle under parabola: 12x*2 - 4A(or something like that, choice A) Just had to multiply the bottom of rectangle by the formula on the right side

Height of building: 32. sin = 4/5, so the whole thing was a 3:4:5 triangle.

Workers salaries: 15000 + 2000x = 20000 + 800x. x was equal to 4 by the way, even though you didn’t have to solve it.

Reading:
Blues and Bach was foundation

The purists were snobbish

He played at a slower tempo

He tilted his head for inspiration

The sax player didn’t play with him

He asked the drummer and guitarist to accompany

2nd act was final (?) small dispute on this one, some say the amateur act was final, meaning the 3rd would be last, but i think i remember in the passage something about the second being the final act

Hattie said it was a rollecoaster

Detached = set apart

Roads became strip malls

Essay was persuasive

Snowflakes were 2 or more crystals

Hiking guide was condescending

Book as companion over years

Didn’t name flower she found

Was excited about naming the Solgadaro whatever(latin name) because it meant that she was very knowledgable about the flowers from the book

Book was worn from use

Scientists couldn’t extract pollution from snow crystals, only detect

Designer Snowflake: OK, this is the most disputed one i have see, where everyone has had a different answer. The 4 choices to the question “what does designer mean in this sentence?” were that no 2 flakes were alike, it showed nature’s beauty, it was created in a lab, or that the flakes were exquisite. My answer was the last choice and here is my reasoning.

The passage referring to designer snowflakes talked about the conditions needed to craft the snowflake. The sentence was “Under these conditions, i was able to create “designer” snowflakes in the lab”. I didn’t choose in was created in a lab, as many apparently did, because it would have made the sentence too redundant because it already said they were created in a lab. I didn’t pick natures beauty, because if it was being created then obviously it didn’t have to do with nature. 2 flakes don’t look alike, i wasn’t so sure about this one, as i don’t remember any reference to this, although since they were being created in a lab they could have been identical. I chose the exquisiteness of the flakes because the quotes around designer in the passage made me think of designer clothing, which is supposedly supposed to mean the clothes are better than normal clothing, and since the passage said that they were being crafted under specific conditions, it made me think that they would be better than flakes under normal conditions. Sorry for huge paragraph, but this was a weird question.

Science:
As the pencil moved farther from scale B, the weight dropped

Upside down scale pointed left, upright pointed right

Each weighed 5 newtons

Had to subtract weight of pencil and board to set scales to 0

Conduction only

Neither scientists views were disputed

halleys comet was a short comet from Oort Cloud.

Jupiter was the giant planet whose gravity affected comets

Comet size(?) i put 30+ because i believed that the passage stated that 10-30 comets weren’t visible, and only “much larger” comets could be seen.

Control group was L4

Aluminum-aluminum hydroxide

octane formula was iso/(iso+hep) x 100

Total octane was from 90-125, because in graph, the octane leveled off at 125, and i believe it said that heptane was added which would have lowered the total

Degree of orbit was 45 degrees, because the other choices were 30 and under, which were visible.

English:

Plane crash: phrase that started with “that” because a crash can’t deliver goods

Completed trip, not finalized or the other choices

Clemento was named MVP

Merchandise was it, not them, because it was singular in context

blazing orange sun, because the others were too synonomous with solar

bats are erroneous

his wife, vera, because it is a nonrestriced appositive, so the seconde part, vera, only modifies his wife, it is not needed.

bait shop specificity - the longest answer was correct, which detailed all the different items

split paragraph was before or after 4 because it went back to the guy, the previous sentenced discussed the organization he was with

it was “sit” because the items after the verb were plural

prudently went before called because it is an adverb

Climbing, not to climb, because it was something that they were doing, not going to do.

bats aren’t threatening

Those are all i have collected. If anyone has more or has corrections, please post them.

The designer snowflake was the lab created them. I made sure to go back into the passage and check that. Word for word it was there.

I disagree strongly over the designer snowflakes.

Agreed Obstinate

I could have sworn it was 150pi.

I believe the control group was L3. It had the least growth and least height.

I hope it was 150pi cause thats what I guessed.

The rational/irrational one is E, rational+rational=rational.

I also remember getting 44 for an answer, but I don’t remember the question. Does anyone remember? It was something about, what’s the least number of something needed for something… I remember, because there was 43 and 44, or something, and when I calculated it I got 43.5 so I just went with 44. I think.

“Was excited about naming the Solgadaro whatever(latin name) because it meant that she was very knowledgable about the flowers from the book”
For this one, I thought it was because she’d already identified this flower before, and she was excited that she’d encountered it again?

Designer snowflake: I said were created in a lab, and I’m like 90% sure this is right, but I understand what you’re saying.

By the way, thanks so much for doing this!

And just for the numbers, so far, on this thread, we have:

16 Math questions
19 Reading questions
14 Science questions
14 English questions

My two cents:

On the cylinder volume question, im 95% sure that the radius was 5, making the volume 150pi and i agree with the comet size over 30 one since the passage stated that the smaller comets were 10-30. I reasoned that if a comet was 30, it was considered small, so i concluded that the larger comets must be bigger than 30.

I agree with both things that abravesome said ^^

It was literally in the passage. They said the lab…something…or “designer” snowflakes.

No, it was L4

Designer snowflakes are clearly snowflakes made in labs.

Ever heard of designer steroids?

Secondly, the area of the cylinder was 150pi

The radius was 5 and the height was 6. Thus, pi r2 h= 150 pi

I think the only question in English that had me was the Dracula movie one.
The answer wasn’t based, because Dracula was originally introduced in that movie, right?
Anyone remember the answer? Can’t remember what i put.

was the iso/heptane+iso answer letter C
like
a)heptane x iso x100
b)iso/heptane
c)iso/(heptane+iso) 100
d)heptane/(iso+heptane)100

What about the english question about the award. I couldn’t decide whether it was
a. It also
b. It thus
Does anyone remember this one?!?!

it also 10char

I think “it also” was already in the passage, thus making the correct choice “a. NO CHANGE.” Right?

tbonus, i got c for that question. i think the OP either got it wrong or just remembered it wrong.
