I’m scheduling for juniour year and needed some help for my history course. I’m aiming for fairly competitive colleges and majoring in computer science. Both courses offer same gpa boost but are different in terms of rigor.
Thanks

Always go AP. A bad DE grade would affect you forever, including for grad school admissions (if you choose that), while a failing AP score does not mean anything bad for you besides having to retake the class. AP has less risk. Learned this the hard way personally.
could you go into a bit more detail. DE at my school gives same number of credits as APUSH. Only thing is with apush it can be used in more colleges outside of my state. De is considered much easier than APUSH. That’s why I’m was confused what you meant by the consenquences of a bad DE grade.
Sure! You probably know most of this stuff at the beginning, but just want to make sure. Dual Enrollment means you get direct college credit upon passing completion of the class. The grade you earn in the class is what is posted on both your high school AND college transcript. AP has a seperation of the grade and the college credit. A grade will be put on your high school transcript and you have the potential to earn college credit if and only if you score a 3, 4, or 5 (changes sometimes depending on specific college) on the advanced placement exam. You could get an F in the AP course and still earn college credit if you passed the test.
In my high school, we have a concurrent program which is the exact same as Dual Enrollment. I took a Concurrent Biology class in Freshman year, something I was not academically ready for at the time. I got a B in the course which was noted on my high school transcript and my college one. Now that I got in to college, the high school grade no longer really matters, but that B that was placed on my college transcript still does. After college, I plan to go to law school, hopefully at top 10 one. The average GPA at Harvard law school (just using as an example) is 3.92. So that B from Freshman year of high school will forever drag my college GPA down a bit no matter how well I do in college.
Now lets say my school offerred AP Bio. I probably would have still got a B in the course and that would have gone on my high school transcript and would have affected my undergrad college admissions. However, the AP exam is totally seperate. If I passed it, the college would just put a S (for Satisfactory) grade on my transcript for the eqivalent course. No affect on my GPA. And if I were to fail the AP exam, there is no problem since that is not noted on a college transcript and I probably would not even send that score to my college.
So, overall, in the event of a bad class grade, a AP course will only affect your prospects of getting into undergrad while a dual enrollment course would affect your prospects of both undergrad and grad or professional school, if you chose to pursue that. Plus passing AP scores tend to transfer a bit better anyway, at least from what I have seen. Also, AP courses tend to be seen a slightly more rigorous than DE, so that can give you a very slight boost in the course rigor evaluation of your college apps.
It’s important to talk with your parents, teachers, and counselors about this. They can probably explain it better than I can and can help you decide what is best for you. Sorry for this long and confusing explanation!
