APUSH Strategy: Will it work?

Ok so I’m a rising junior, and my schedule looks like this (right now) for next year:

AP Calc BC
AP Physics B & C
AP US History
Gifted LA
AP Psychology

So, I was thinking of buying the AMSCO book since I’ve heard it’s really helpful for APUSH and start reading it over the summer so I can “get ahead” for next year.

I’m not the type of person to do this, but next year is the first year where I have a (for me) rigorous schedule. This year, I only had 1 AP. And I’ve heard physics and calc are really hard…

What do you guys think? Will it work? Any comments/suggestions appreciated!! Thanks in advance!!

Out of all those classes to get ahead in, i would choose physics or calc!

Reviewing and mastering physics principles and concepts are invaluable because you will need to know all formulas and properties, etc.

Calc can be prepared for by simply getting a review book for AB/BC and teaching yourself (or reviewing) the AB material. That way you’re ready to develop yourself further and come test time you can focus on the more difficult coursework.

APUSH is very easy to get ahead, so not knocking that at all. Depending on where you go to school you may finish the curriculum very early, or not finish it. Your teacher will cover everything in class so the only time to really “get ahead” would be in March and try to be one unit ahead of the class so the teacher will essentially review the material for you while you learn the next unit on your own. That way you are well prepared if the class doesn’t finish the curriculum. I go to school in NY and we start school in mid september, so its very rushed come ap time.

and just a question, how can you take physics b and c at the same time? Those tests occur at the same time during AP testing weeks.

Good Luck!

It could work but keep in mind along with the reading comes alot of additional work with APUSH, our teacher makes us write essays and do these god awful 10 page outlines of the weeks assigned chapter. APUSH is one of the most work intensive classes I have ever taken, so even though you may know the material I would not write it off as being an easy/blow off class.

Yankee: Thanks for the advice! I plan to take this Calculus class over the summed, so that should help a lot. If not, then I guess I’ll just buy a prep book and start teaching myself, line you said. As for physics, I don’t have any plan, but I probably should, seeing as how physics is arguably the hardest AP out of all of these.

I’ve gotten that question before. Our school has block scheduling, so we have 4 classes a day, each 90 mins long. And I’m on this thing called the math/science pathway, which is like an accelerated track for math and science, so we do physics b first semester and physics c second semester on the pathway.

Ivygolfer: yeah, I’ve hear from kids on CC that APUSH is generally very work-intensive. At my school, there’s 2 teachers: they both aren’t excellent, but one is far worse than the other. Her class solely depends on one NFL team’s season, which she is a die hard fan of. Hint: they just won the SB. I think, just like any other SS AP, the secret to doing well in the class is just reading the book.

Understood, sounds like that can be difficult, my attention span would get all haywire in a 90 minute class. APUSH is probably the most work intensive AP along with english literature.

Don’t procrastinate! I’m taking 4 APs this year and it really has been my downfall! Good thing im a junior and learned these mistakes so that next year when i take 6 I will be able to function. In my school its very easy to take ap’s because many of them are required classes to graduate, so why not take the ap level course

Yeah it should probably help that you already know the material before you start the class. I’m probably going do the same, I’m taking APUSH too next year. I’m going to read the same textbook we’ll use in the class though, so it’ll help me go faster when I’m doing outlines.

Should i even take APUSH or not? I don’t want it to become too much to handle; my primary aim is to keep a 4.0. I talked to my counselor an she told me that even if I don’t take it, she’ll still give me the highest points in rigor because I’m taking AP Gov/Exon senior year. But, I’ve only taken 1 AP so far; I’m behind my classmates, and I want to go to UGA Honors.

I’d study all these APs ahead over the summer.
