Are "Alumni Magazines" obsolete in the age of facebook?

Everyone knows that once you graduate, you keep in touch with your college friends via facebook. What is the purpose of an “Alumni Magazine’”?

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/02/business/media/02alumni.html?_r=1&sq=college&st=cse&adxnnl=1&oref=slogin&scp=1&adxnnlx=1212692440-yUjp1KqXrf0eGTKfyYb8pg

I don’t think so. I still read our alumni magazine because it has lots of interesting stories about the school and events. I’m an avid Internet junkie (obviously… I’m posting on here  ) but I still like sitting down in a nice chair and reading the old fashion way.

I would accept the point that with the Facebook and other online resources the whole ‘class notes’ bit may suffer a bit, but that’s only one part of the whole magazine and I’d still read it even if there were no class notes.

Well, one glib answer is that alumni magazines continue to meet the needs of those of us who leave Facebook to our kids. :)

I read my Alumni magazines much more for finding out about interesting things that are going on at my alma mater rather than to follow friends…also it has the form for Alumni football ticket requests (kind of important when you don’t have enough student loan money to donate to the Athletic Department to earn enough points to be considered worthy of tickets)…

I like to read about new construction on campus and about professors retiring.
And although I have a facebook page (rarely used), I don’t have any old college friends on it.

On the other hand, I enjoy having facebook to see what my 20-something nieces and nephews are up to, and my youngest sister in law has a great page that always has great new photos of the baby nephew.

MidwestMom, I didn’t mean to be snarky. I think what I should have said is, for those of us who have been begged by our children to leave Facebook to them.

They probably wouldn’t care as long as I didn’t try to friend them. But since D attends my alma mater (I guess I need to learn to say, D and I have the same alma mater), I’d show up in her network anyway, so I’ve just left it alone.
