Are any of these dorms a good distance from the communications building?

I’m a journalism major by the way. Anyways I’m deciding how to order dorm preferences and I’ve got Brackenridge, Prather, Jester, Moore-Hill. Kinsolving is my number 1 but I don’t know if I turned in my housing app too late to get that dorm. Also, I know kinsolving is a little more expensive and jester cheaper than other dorms but anyone know about the rates of Brackenridge and Prather? Not a lot of info about those two except that they’re alike and sometimes people fight to get into them. Also, my roomate is going to be a business major in McCombs so if someone could tell me out of those choices which would be a good fit location wise for her?

from the communications building, kinsolving is by far the closest (pretty much right across the street). prather, brackenridge, moore-hill, and jester are all next to each other so the distances will be very similar.

from McCombs, kinsolving will be the farthest away. prather, brackenridge, moore-hill, and jester are by far the closest but will still be similar in distance (jester will be relatively closer though)

as for dorm rates, see here: [Division of Housing and Food Service - Prices](<a href=“UHD Homepage | University Housing and Dining”>UHD Homepage | University Housing and Dining)

given that you will be sharing a room, brackenridge and prather will be the cheapest ones you can get

Well, now I know that it’s inconvenient that she is a business major and I’m a journalism major. It’s alright though. When you say that brackenridge, prather, jester are the farthest from the communications building do you mean that they’re actually far away from it or just in comparison to kinsolving? If you could give me an estimate on how long it takes to walk to the communications building from brackenridge/prather that would be great. I’m kind of worried b/c I’m bad with directions and I tend to zone out sometimes when walking long distances.

they’re pretty far away, as in almost on the other side of campus. in other words, using a map, the distance from the communications building to kinsolving is 2 inches, whereas the distance to Jester is about 12 inches.

[UT Austin Campus Flash Map](http://www.utexas.edu/maps/flash/)

the communications building is CMA, Kinsolving is KIN, and Jester (you have to scroll in the south-east direction) is JES

oh, and McCombs is CBA, pretty near Jester. similar to the distance from the communications building to Kinsolving

It looks like a really long walk…Does anyone know if I’d even get kinsolving when I turned in my housing app. in Feb? If that chance is gone then at least I won’t have to worry about it.

Honestly, all the residence halls are not an excessive distance from the main areas of campus – you’re going to be walking around campus a lot, so it’s not a big deal. Plus, if you’re feeling lazy / other issues, you can always take the Forty Acres bus, which makes a loop around campus. It takes me ten minutes to walk from San Jacinto to Kinsolving, but I realize I may walk faster than others. For others, it might take 15 minutes, or, if you’re meandering, maybe 20.

It won’t matter because you aren’t going to have very many classes in the Comm school as a freshman, you have to fulfill your area requirements.

The liberal arts intro classes tend to meet in the area called the “six-pack” which surrounds the South Mall (Parlin, Calhoun, Homer Rainey, Batts, Mezes, and Benedict Halls), as well as a few other nearby buildings like Garrison Hall, Battle Hall, Waggener Hall, and the University Teaching Center.

These buildings are pretty much equidistant from both sets of dorms so it really doesn’t matter where you live. I have 3 classes in Garrison Hall this semester, and last semester I had 2 in Parlin Hall and 1 at the UTC.
