Are AP scores considered for admission? Specifically Transfer?

At the information session, the lady said that they don’t consider them, but if that is the case then why is there an entire section on the application devoted to AP Exams and scores?

Just wondering. Thanks

bring up my post

I called the day yesterday and they said ‘don’t send it’.

There’s a whole section of it on the transfer app though: Please list any Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate Examination dates and scores received

um, yes they are considered if offered. they are one of many things that are considered, and how important like every part of the application depends on how competitive you are. if you’re not competitive (because you got c’s through hs or something) then no score will make up the difference. but there are some cases where an ap score or class can tell the adcom something about you that is pertinent. and usually they work either to complement or supplement information received from grades or sat2s.

ex. 1 - student is really interested in economics, and receives a 5 in the AP Macro(and/or Micro) test, but can’t take a econ sat2 to prove competency, the ap score helps offer that kind of information about competency and preparation.

ex. 2 - student is really interested in physics, and receives a 5 in AP English, whereas the score is certainly good and there is some virtue to being well-rounded, it wont substantively change or improve the decision making (in fact in this case, i would gather that taking the course in a non-specialty field matters more than any test score you receive).

ex. 3 - student is really interested in biology, and receives a 3 in ap bio, this helps provide to some degree a questionmark either on test-prep ability or their true interest in the subject and might go against the student.

Well I graduated Salutatorian, and I had really high marks in all of my classes, but I pretty much bombed all of the AP exams except for 2 because I didn’t try. Would I be better off listing the courses and not putting up the grades?

i think you know the answer to the question.

but your post brings up a bigger question; i’d be more troubled by the fact that you didn’t try. not because the adcoms would find that out. but it is in my experience that not trying for something like an ap exam is not an isolated event. and it may appear somewhere else in your application (your professor rec, etc.). this is not meant to be negative - but more of an advisory - take a look at your app, make sure it presents you in a positive light all around.

Thank you, that is very good advice. But I believe that this particular part of the application is the only part that I am not that confident about.

I must admit, I’m a bit shakey on the professor recs because I’m a freshman. Having only 1 semester under my belt leaves me with very little options as to who to ask and if they’ll write it well for me.
