I hope they are.

Yes, the degree of rigor in your high school classes is considered - how many you took, particularly in the context of how many are offered at your school and the typical load of other applicants in past years from your school.

Same with number of academic classes and difficulty. Also any particular signs of passion and interest, such as taking quite a few extra classes in some subject area.

Admission at Cal is holistic, thus they look at everything they have about the applicant, including all their experience with students from that school in the past, eveyrthing they know about the area, the school, and whether you would fill in a gap to yield a richer more interesting mixture of students that would benefit all who attend.

poke around the web sites of the UCs - you will find most of your questions and plenty more is answered already. For example, http://students.berkeley.edu/admissions/freshmen.asp?id=56&navid=N

Thank you! :)
