The search doesn’t help so I didn’t bother because I already tried another topic that didn’t bring up related results. For some reason, sites that use this forum company/setup have vague search results (not just this site).

I really like art as in actually drawing and creating, not art history or anything like that. I know I can’t major in something else and then just minor in something art related because if I really want to become amazing and succeed, I have to put my whole focus into art.

I have to either decide between something completely different or completely art.

I think people who major in this area are brave because they are taking a big financial risk because of something they love rather than majoring in something safe, like something in the medical field.

Is this field very hard?

I am also a bit undecided because I feel art schools probably don’t give a crap about SATs and all that stuff. They are probably more into skill and students’ portfolio. I don’t know if I should be wasting my time studying for SATs or instead, working on a portfolio.

You got no answers to your previous thread probably because your question isn’t reasonable. “Risky” and “worthless” are hard to define, and plenty people “succeed” with an art school education. Just depends on your definition of success

That said, art school education is more limited than the education you would get in a college or university. Like you yourself said - they don’t care about SATs, only limit their requirements to your portfolio.

My recommendation is: study for SATs, work on your grades, then try to get into a good college/university with a strong arts programs. They exist. You will grow as an artist in that kind of setting. The general ed requirements will expose you to other fields which you may end up pursuing - and which could also give you needed skills that will later pay your bills - while you pursue art.

I’m not applying to art schools, but I love art, and it will be a hobby of mine for the rest of my life. I do have lots of friends who are applying to art schools though, so I might be able to help you out a bit. Art schools are VERY competitive. I’ve heard stories of people destroying other people’s work just to get ahead. Now, that’s probably rare, and you can’t expect that, but it has happened. I have a friend who knows how competitive art school is and decided to go to a normal university and then transfer later when she’s older and a better artist.

Yeah, if you love art, you gotta take a risk. It may end badly, or it may end very well. But I’m sure there are lots of people who originally major in something else and decide to go into art later on. Maybe it’s rare, but it’s possible. It’s like people who double major in music and biology. It’s hard, but it’s not unheard of.

I didn’t post a thread before. I meant I figured others might have asked it, but thanks for your reply.

This sounds like good advice, but I’m not sure what schools these would be. I think it is good to have something to fall back on, but I just hope whatever it is doesn’t consume my time, so I can’t do what I really love.

That made me lol a bit. It sounds a little psychotic.

I was thinking computer science if not art, which could be useful when combined with art maybe. I am already taking AP computer science and another computer programming class so I would already have some experience.
