The boorish thugs from Kentucky were in the Native American veteran’s face for ten minutes, according to other Natives who were with him. Though that might be an understandable overestimate, it must have seemed like an eternity. It’s odd for white people to chant “Build that wall” at Natives. Who do those despicable punks think was here first?
Kudos to the guy they harassed, Nathan Phillips, for his dignity, both during the harassment and afterwards.
No one is suddenly more racist. They’re just A- empowered to do it in a way they haven’t since the 60s and B- caught on camera AND being spread by social media.
These kids are fed white washed history from the cradle so there is absolutely no irony in their minds.
I’m writing a paper on the “border crisis” in Detroit from the 1920s. It is chilling how I can take the quotes from politicians a century ago and put them next to modern day ones and they’re indistinguishable.
I agree that the only thing “new” is the “seen on news” aspect of these episodes. I’m also glad they are making the news for all to see - and hopefully learn from.
I tell the students I see that I’m really hopeful their generation can right the wrongs of those who came before them. Just in my classes I’ve seen enough students change their views once their eyes are opened that I remain hopeful…but kids need to be in an environment where someone can point out the specifics about biology, etc. Not all are.
Is it “live and learn” or is it " breath, grab and eat" in the name of “freedom?” Even some “Christians” tolerate this behavior. I have to stay polite. Democracy requires it.
If you do the research I am sure you’ll find something about the under developed teen brain. Teens are just stupid. It’s the only way we keep seeing these moments after they all go viral.
Can’t help but feel that too many adults are leading the parade by setting the wrong examples for the developing teen brains. We all need to show more genuine respect. In the 1970’s I was often the only white face at national college conferences and was treated with nothing but respect and consideration for my minority position because my colleagues had experience in those shoes.
We can’t just hang this problem on the teenage mind.

Because of the documentation of social media, let’s hope these kids get expelled. The school is investigating (I’m referring to the the KY student /Native American incident). I hope to hear some follow up.
I live at the other end of the state from Covington Catholic, but the same mentality that empowered those young men is alive and well in my area. I read a thoughtful post on FB about this subject his morning, but then scrolled through the comments only to find one man adamantly defending the young man who was in the face of Nathan Phillips, saying that he and the others seemed to only be celebrating and participating in the Native American ritual. He said that over and over and refused to acknowledge any arguments to the contrary. I am sad about this.
Perhaps these examples may also be examples of what not to do if you do not want your college admission to be rescinded (a common question this time of year). Being expelled from one’s high school in senior year is not going to look good for a student who has been admitted to college which will find out in the summer, if not earlier, about the expulsion.
