I got a B on an essay I wrote and I was treated like I’d failed because of that. My parent said it rooted from me being lazy and failing to do the work, but I honestly loved writing that essay, spent hours researching, and working on it. I can understand where the B came from, it did need editing was somewhat unorganized but overall was pretty good. I have gotten A+'s before on essays I’ve done just as much research for so maybe there was a different issue? What do you guys do for perfecting essays? And as for the main question: are B’s really that bad?
Oh, I realize I posted this to the wrong forum, but I don’t know how to change that or if you can, sorry! Update: thx someone for switching this to the right forum, sorry I’m still trying to figure this website out
No, B’s are not bad. It is perfectly normal to have B’s as overall grades. Getting a B on one paper isn’t anything to worry about.
If you wondering what you did to miss the A, I would recommend talking to your teacher. Writing is subjective, and unfortunately, the amount of time you put in won’t guarantee good results if you don’t know what your teacher is looking for.
Yes you’re going to fail life, end up being rejected by every college you apply to, go work at McDonalds, get married to a street drug addict, get paid minimum wage all your life, and die at the age of 40 just for that B you got.
I’m really sorry you’ll never be happy again because you got a B on an essay )-:
On a serious note, everybody screws up eventually. You usually get As on essays, so one B really won’t do anything to kill you.
@LeopardFire Thanks! Yep, good point.
@noplayallwork Haha, your comment made me laugh! Thx! I wasn’t too worried about the grade, it isn’t an overall grade and the main issue was the disappointment other people feel about it, that makes it hard.

Apparently I am destitute, and I have been dead for years. I had never realized that! I would have been very happy to get B’s in English in high school.
I was actually quite happy when one daughter finally came home with a B on a mid-term progress report. It allowed her to learn that getting a B is not the end of the world, and in fact life goes on just the same as it did before she got a B. She is headed to a great university in the fall (even with that B).
You’re hung up on a single B on a single essay in high school? It’s good to hold yourself to a high standard, but I’d argue that that’s too high of a standard for you to measure up to. Even the most intelligent people I know, people who are headed towards Ivies and doctorates in the future, have gotten B’s on essays before. A B does not make you lazy, a B absolutely does not make you a failure. A B is a good grade for a standalone assignment, and since you’ve shared that you usually score above a B on essays, this single B does not reflect on your character and work ethic at all. Do not measure the entirety of your self-worth on other people’s opinions. If you enjoyed doing that assignment and you put your honest-to-goodness effort into that assignment, that’s what ultimately matters.
It’s also important to remember that teachers are human beings and their grading is always subjective. What one teacher might consider a work of literary art, another teacher may consider verbal diarrhea. Besides, if an English teacher were to give you perfect scores on all of your essays, they wouldn’t be doing their job correctly. There’s always room for improvement in English, and in any subject for that matter.
Did you look at the rubric? It might have had sections specifically on editing (or conventions) and organization that lowered your grade even though you did a ton of research.
And to answer your question, no, Bs aren’t the end of the world. You’ll get plenty more in your academic career, I promise its not a big deal. That’s why you have more than one assignment contribute to your final grade!
It’s only one assignment man! Don’t sweat it. Even if you ended up with a B in the class, a couple of B’s aren’t the end of the world – especially if they’re upper level courses! Colleges would rather see lower grades in upper level classes than higher grades in basic classes, because you are challenging yourself. Of course, don’t let your grades suffer too much. I have a C in APUSH, that’s kinda on the borderline. Of course, I should’ve taken regular US history beforehand…
No
I think you should use the B to let you know that you need to work more on organization next time.
Also next time start earlier and ask your teacher to look it over and give suggestions…and then implement those suggestions.
@DadTwoGirls Thx, yep I guess getting a B can also be a great lesson.
@Naperthrill thanks!! You’re comment was really encouraging, I really appreciate it!
@snowfairy137 Thanks, good advice I should probably go back through it and edit to find my mistakes
@MNballer19 Thx! Yes B’s aren’t the end of the world
@bobbybobcat Well said.
@bopper Yes, going over it with my teacher is a good idea, thanks!
@Bobbybob444555 Well said.
@Bobbybobcat sorry wrong name!
@RavenclawStudent Just explain to your parents or whoever else that it really shouldn’t be much of a big issue, especially if your overall grade is an A. In the long run it won’t make any difference.
@noplayallwork Okay, thx, they are rather intense but I’m sure that it’s not too big a deal once things are given more time.
