Are coaches able to approach/talk to players at ID camps? We’re new to this and getting mixed messages on that front. To be honest, the interest or lack thereof doesn’t seem related to my S’s performance at these camps. I’m wondering if there are some camp scenarios where coaches can talk to players and others where they cannnot.

In my experience, which admittedly only includes camps at Ivies and NESCACs, recruiting activities and camp are supposed to be strictly separated. At one prospect clinic we attended at the last minute where we had a campus tour prior to camp, which started at a particular time, they would not even touch the camp paperwork prior to that moment that “camp” started.

In practice, coaches have quiet asides with players all the time, often off the cuff on water breaks, and they will make comments here and there out of earshot of others.

All our in person coach communications have been immediately before camps start or right after camps end.

I don’t know what the “ID camps” are but I’m guessing that it is some form of an off campus camp. In basketball and I would guess it is the same in other sports the general rule is that if it is off campus the Coach can’t talk to you and if it is on campus (at the Coaches school) the Coach can talk.

Thank you. I think njballer hit the nail on the head for us. Yes, it was the coach’s campus where my son was approached, while numerous (and very silent) coaches were at the ID camp held off their campuses. Several D3 coaches have since emailed him following the latter so that makes sense. (For what it’s worth, none of these coaches came to watch him so I suspect it’s not very rare for coaches to look around at others in attendance.)
