Are cc chance threads misleading??

99% of the students going on cc are the most excellent around the nation. They have super awesome high school records as well as extracurricular activities.

Whenever I open a chance thread, I always see nearly perfect sat scores, lots of AP/IB courses, 3.999 and up GPA, top 5 class rank, national merit finalists, amc, presidents of a lot of clubs, MUN, vasity sports, prestigious summer programs…and they are here to ask people to chance their possibilities of getting into ivies while they ALREADY REALIZE they DO have a chance. Is this a bit redundant? i mean who has been a distinguished student throughout 4 years of high school would say he doesnt have even A LITTLE CHAHCE of getting into at least 1 ivy?

Their flawless profiles mislead many not-so-distinguished studnets. They form an image that only people with these profiles are qualified for ivies. However, looking back to my high school, a majority of those accepted to ivies had sat scores of 2000-2100, 3.6-3.7 gpa, never taken any competitions in high school, never become presidents of any club…

If they had put their chance threads on cc, most of them would have been predicted to have very little chance of getting into any ivy, but in reality, they won. On the other hand, some of those predicted to get into ivies on cc were rejected by most ivies.

I don’t deny the fact that perfect students have a great chance of getting into ivies, but at the same time, many others without gorgeous profiles are qulified for ivies too. Are cc chance threads misleading in some way?

Yes, definitely. The requirements people seem to think there are to get into good schools is absurd. When I did a chance thread, I got somewhat more realistic results, assuming I improve my GPA by just 0.2, which shouldn’t be hard considering I’m not far along high school.

But when someone asks “What are my chances of getting into UCSD?” (which I asked and have seen a lot of), and they have hundreds of hours of community service, in-state residency, and SAT of 2100, and an UW GPA of around 3.6 and W 4.0, it seems people often say that they don’t have great enough ECs, or their GPA needs to be higher.

I dunno it’s not a bad thing, setting absurd standards just make me try harder (something I DESPERATELY need to do :P), but it can be quite worrisome to some people.

In reality the standard to have a chance to get into a college is much lower than people here say. Not to say it’s easy to get into a school among the 50 best in the country, but you certainly don’t need a 4.0 UW 4.6 W GPA and an SAT score of 2300 to have a CHANCE getting into an Ivey league school and to guarantee into a good school. It’s stressing me out a bit but when I look at actual results it all works out fine.
