A good friend of mine is a clinical psychology grad. student who’s currently doing her internship at a large, public university counseling center (“internship” is basically a year-long, really poorly paid job that clinical psych students complete just prior to finishing their degree–it’s a national match process, much akin to medical school residency), and I’m really shocked at the sheer amount of work she has–11-12 hour days, etc. It sounds brutal! Of course, interns can be worked any amount of time without overtime pay, so the situation maybe different, but just from hearing her talk, I get the impression that these centers are really overloaded in terms of client load. It’s made me wonder about advice students receive to “go to counseling center.” Can they really deal with all these students?

bump for discussion
