Are Exeter, Andover and the like intelectual?

Hi, im applying to these schools as a junior, i am a sophomore in public high school now. My question is , are students at these schools interested? Are they concerned with ideas and are they passionate? Is it more than just wanting to do well on a test?

I find Andover to be pretty intellectual. Mind, it varies widely–some kids are only intellectual when they are sat down in a classroom and need to think, others are constantly intellectual, but overall, I find it a very mentally stimulating environment. My friends and I like to have debates every day at lunch on somewhat random topics. Yesterday it was Steinbeck v. Hemingway and then Mac v. PC. :)

As prettyckitty said, it varies widely. Some kids come into Andover with intellectual passion, some discover their passion here, and others remain apathetic. Most students are interested in their classes, whether they are passionate about the subject is a different question. Some subjects, such as philosophy and the social sciences, bring out passion that is both in the classroom and from the outside world. Lots of students are concerned with issues outside of the classroom whether they participate through clubs or just discuss issues with a friend.

sugerkim, what year are you?

I’m a senior.
