Are fraternities High School all over again?

Hey,

So I am transferring at the end of my freshmen year to one of the following schools: USC, Indiana University, Syracuse, or Penn State at end of sophomore year. This year I will be a commuter at a local school to save some money my freshmen year. Now being a transfer I will be behind on things such as people I know. I will obviously not have too many friends to start the year. Yes it is not impossible to find a some decent friends in such big schools, but it is different than freshmen year when everyone there is in your situation and more open to mingling I suppose. One solution: Join a frat. Joining a frat is something I always went against because to me it seems like High School all over again. I enjoyed high school and have certain groups that I am specific to hang with more but in college I like the idea of being able to meet and hang around with new people all the time. Joining a frat to me seems like I will be limiting myself to a relatively small social group. Maybe Im just naive but I thats why I am posting here. Please let me know what truly is it like being in a frat. For example, can I hang with non-frat members a bunch of nights in a row without being questioned by other members?

Thanks
