Are honorary degrees a joke since they gave one to Kermit the Frog?

Kermit was awarded an honorary doctorate of Amphibious Letters on May 19, 1996, at Southampton College, New York, where he also gave a commencement speech

Honorary degrees are given to persons who have a major contribution and likely coincides with speaking at a school. Sometimes the person has made a difference locally such as the school superintendent who then insisted on being addressed as doctor. Others have national reputation who brought considerable insight and commitment to everyone.

Kermit is famous and has contributed to generations of
children’s joy, learning and laughter. Kermit was also the commencement speaker. He brings a commendable message. It isn’t easy being green!

Remember an honorary doctorate acknowledges respect for an individual or frog, but carries no academic recognition.

Kermit also has an honorary MBA from the University of Maryland. He is a very respected critter.
Unlike Bill Cosby, Kermit’s honorary degrees have not been revoked.

I’m glad they honored him before he croaked.

No one claims they did the work for the degree. It is just a nice gesture. I’d rather Kermit got one than the guy who got one for speaking st D1’s commencement — a few years later he was charged with sharing classified materials with the woman he was having an affair with with and lost his high level job in disgrace.
