My current schedule change may not allow me to do an internship for my biochemistry degree - is it that important or can I go to class this summer?

Internship is important due to the actual work experience you gain. The work experience is normally valued highly by potential employers for your first job out of college. Unless there is a very strong reason why you have to attend class this summer, I suggest you look for an internship instead. Of course, due to the very challenging economic situation, getting an internship is a tall order and the only option available might be to take summer classes.
