I was speaking to a friend who had gone through an MS in Geology years ago and she said that the program was no cost, perhaps as she had TA duties as part of the deal. I wonder what the norm is for biology masters programs. Thank you

You will pay for most Masters degrees.
Most programs will expect you to pay. However, there are some MS programs in biology, specifically, that may offer assistantships or even grants to allow you to attend cost-free or nearly so.
In bioinformatics, you will almost certainly have to pay. Those tend to be professional programs instead of academic ones.
