Are my classes competitive enough...Am I?

Hi, I am an entering Senior at a private catholic high school in Chicago. From 6th-12th grade the school has about 300-ish students. The graduating class of 2009 is about 40-45 students. I would say that the courses at my school are very competitive…as are the students. My school offers limited APs because of its size, but I take them when available. I was just wondering how my classes and EC’s would stack up to other seniors. Also what would my chances for getting into Northwestern University be?

Freshman Year:
Introduction to Literature (H)
Algebra II (H)
Latin I (H)
Biology (H)
Humanities I (H)
Ancient History (H)

Sophomore Year:
British Literature (H)
Geometry (H)
Latin II (H)
Physics (H)
Humanities II (H)
World History AP
Extra: Was selected to take a year long Greek class.

Junior Year:
American Literature, English Comp/Lang AP (Got a 4)
Pre-Calc (H)
Latin III (H)
Chemistry (H)
Humanities III (H)
American History AP (Got a 5)

Senior Year:
English Literature AP
Calculus AP
Latin IV AP
Biology AP
Humanities IV
European History AP

My EC’s, I think, are pretty good. As of recent, I have been on the Debate Team all of high school. During my Junior and soon-to-be Senior year I am captain of the team as well. I have also played soccer since Sophomore year. Since i was a freshman I have traveled over an hour away to be a volunteer at a day camp for autistic children and have racked up over 100 hours in service. I have also volunteered at the library for 50 hours. My Junior year year I helped coach a 6th and 7th grade basketball team for over 100 hours as well. This is not all I have done, but I think it shows a taste of what kind of person I am.

ACT: 30

My overall high school average sits right at around the 90% range. I know it would be higher, but because some of the classes I took it is lower. For example when I took the Greek course my Sophomore year, I was barely able to get a C (80%), but I didn’t want to drop it because I hate giving up. Also, I am not the greatest in math and during my senior year, I missed straight A’s because I got 2 C’s in math for the first semester, but in the second semester I was able to pull up my math grades to a B. So I guess that shows that I am willing to work and that I improve. My trend from Fresh-Junior would be in the improvement trend, I took on more coursework and still improved my GPA. Just some examples.

I think I am a laid back person who deals well with stress and problems I face. I am a very competitive person whether it be in sports or academics. I am a people person, very rarely do i do anything alone.

Sorry for the long read, but you’ve made it to the end!

Thanks so much for reading and any input that you give me is greatly appreciated

Thanks!

Bumping saves lives!

aren’t you going to be a senior? You said you didn’t do well in math your senior year…
I think you have a good chance. I assume you took the hardest classes since you said your school does not offer many.
You show leadership by being captain of debate team and coaching basketball. What else do you do though?
Also, are you retaking the ACT? I think you should bring that up to atleast a 33 for Northwestern.

Sorry, I didn’t do well in math, but I’m not good at math in general…but thanks for the tips

In addition to the EC’s I put I also:
Write for the newspaper
Help with the yearbook
Starred and helped direct a remake of Beowulf that won a local film festival
Tutor my classmates in Latin and History out of school
And my Junior year I was a national debater and competed at the national tournament. I was ranked 40th out of a field of 200+.
Hmm, there are some more, but I am drawing a blank, I’ll edit as they come to me.

Bump bump bump

Bump it up

Ok…first of all you take Latin which is awesome!! Here are a few things I feel:
-You will be in no way hurt by the fact that your school doesn’t offer a billion AP courses. Colleges know schools and can see what courses they offer. The important thing is that you take the most rigorous program possible and do as well as possible.
-Have you thought about taking the SAT or retaking the ACT? Don’t get me wrong, a 30 is a great score, it’s like 95th percentile or something very high. Aiming for a 32+ would offset what might be a lower GPA at Northwestern with a high testing score.

Wow thanks for the advice. And yes, I am taking the Sept 13 ACT and I’ve started to really study hard for them and I know a 32 is within my grasp. Also, I am going to take at least 3 SAT II’s in October. Is it just good that I am taking a language like Latin or does that provide an advantage for me?

Super Bump!

Also wondering about any good pre-med programs that I would be qualified for?

Bump it up

Chance me Please

El Bumpo…

good on your classes
very competitive.

Thanks!
Any advice on NW or where else I should apply?

Anymore Please?

Bumpoooooo

Morning Bump
