Are my essay ideas ok?

UMich essays

1.) Contribute to the school–I talked about how I am multilingual and how that helps me understand more points of views, because languages are actually all very different depending on its background and culture. I’m not sure though if this is what they wanted?

2.) Major (English)–I talked about junior English class when I had the scariest teacher in the school (she was kind of psychotic but she gave me my rec) and the first time she gave me my paper back it was full of red marks, but a lot of it were actually compliments on the parts of my analysis that actually came very naturally to me (like opinions/analysis/supporting/arguments) instead of writing back what the teacher said, etc., which taught me what writing and analyzing really was…

3.) Setback I had (the long)–This is the one I’m not sure if it will be okay. I’m going to talk about a game of Go I played, which I’m not sure if is okay cause it’s not really life but a game. Cause otherwise, I’ll be talking about how when I was little my English was really bad and I worked on it all the time, but when I walked into high school, my English teacher immediately assumed I’m an Asian math/science nerd and only in Honors for college stuff. Yet I’m not sure if that’s really a setback and I don’t really want to say I was horrible at English when I was kid since I’m going to major in English. Or maybe I could switch back and forth–like make the game of Go a metaphor to my English situation.

switching back and forth could make your essay a tad disjointed, so I think it’s better to stick to one topic.

A game of Go sounds like an intriguing topic, and if you can write a nice essay (and make sure there is some mention of a setback!) then why not? As for the other topic, the thing is you are already writing about your English in essay#2, so there is a danger that there will be repetition.

Btw, I am an avid chess player, which might make me biased in favour of board games like Go.

ok, thanks (I used to love chess too, but then my brother started beating me daily which made me not love it so much though that might not be such a good example of responding to a setback), I think I’ll write about a game of Go. It’ll be, at the very least, original.

On a side note, I rewrote my first essay so now it is about how in Taiwan, I’m an American, and in America, I’m Chinese and how this made me feel like I never belonged until I realized that this just meant that I am both and bicultural, which helps me be able to connect to others better and love different cultures even more (I’m thinking about doing International Affairs as well as English). Now, I’m really not sure if I’m answering the question?

Looks fine to me, but I can’t really tell unless I see the exact wording of the prompt.
