are parents' names required?

see title above

the commonapp says that schools want the data for mainly demographic purposes only, even if the applicant is relieved of her subjection to her parents.

my parents were not alumni, nor do they hold fancy degrees
what are the consequences of, if possible, omitting the names section (e.g., hurt admission chances because of failure to follow directions?)

I would put their names. I mean, it won’t hurt you in any way.

I would prefer to omit them if doing so bears no penalty.

anyone here?

Any blanks on an application triggers a red flag
Parents’ names are needed if you are a minor
Parents’ names are needed to establish your state residency
If they are illegals they will not be turned in to Immigration

They will not be reported to INS. You can list their names.

If you are applying for FA, you will have to provide their complete information on that part of the application, anyway.
Why don’t you want to list their names?

Consider that if you leave it blank (and the prompt allows that so you can send), you are likely to get a follow-up notice from the college asking you to provide the information and thus focusing on and highlighting whatever issue you are concerned about.

Do your parent’s names have apostrophe’s in them? I know that sometimes when I have write my mom’s name it’s hard because one one hand, my mom’s name has apostrophes in them. But on the other hand I don’t want people to think we are ghetto. It’s a dilemma.

Majestic…

Will you be applying for financial aid? If so, your parents names will be needed.

yeaimprettysweet…I wouldn’t be concerned about your mom’s name. You’ll be admitted based on YOU, not some odd biases that probably don’t exist.

We will need more information than you are providng. All other things being equal, just put the names in or there will be glitches in processing your application. If one of your parents is undocumented, that will not matter. Colleges are not ICE agents. If there is some other concern, nobody here can give you advice unless you let us know what’s up. (For financial aid, you will have to put their names down.)

As I understand it, if I fill out the FAFSA as an independent, I may omit all parental information. They’re not illegal, but the entry of their names may compromise a legal name change.

If you are filing FAFSA as an independent, your parents’ names would only be necessary if you want them listed as next-of-kin in case of an emergency. Regular “grownups” don’t report this kind of stuff on their applications either.

so in other words not altogether necessary.
As for its being left blank, can college admissions penalize me for it?
