Are Patents Assets in Financial Aid

I am working on designs for a product I would like to patent, but I was wondering how a patent would affect financial aid, if it could be counted to have a certain amount of value and would take away from financial aid packages. My family is in a very difficult financial situation, with a single mother who is now unemployed, 2 colelge age siblings and another graudating this year, and i’m going to be relying on scholarships and financial aid for most of college. I’d love to create a product, but until it actually starts selling, I don’t want to have it count against me in financial aid.

EDIT: oops, I was working on two threads at the same time, can a mod move this to financial aid

Unless your patent is generating income, it shouldn’t count as any kind of asset. But your best bet is to attend one of those FAFSA workshops put on by California Cash For College through the California Student Aid Commission in January to get clarification: [California Cash for College, Grants for College Students, Student Scholarships California: Calgrants](http://www.calgrants.org/index.cfm?navId=16)
