I know rice is definitely not preppy in general, but are would it seem out of place to wear j crew, lacoste, polo, etc regularly?

Not at all. Plenty of people wear “preppy” clothes. No one really judges anyone for what they wear. I will warn you that you’re going to want to stay away from the polos and long-sleeve button downs until about late September… it’s too hot for anything but flip flops, shorts, and a light t-shirt.

I disagree with this statement. There are people who wear preppy clothes, but not “plenty of people.” A lot of people here, quite honestly, wear plain clothes - you have those people who just roll out of bed and put on whatever, and others who take some time to look good (minority, however). Rice is no Washington & Lee/Vanderbilt/SMU, obviously.

I agree with this for the most part - anywhere people will judge you based on appearance and first impressions, not exclusive to Rice, but no one will care what you wear here.

This is, in fact, one of the many things my daughter likes about Rice, that people (girls, especially) are not obsessed with how they dress. She told us a story about getting a free t-shirt one day–something that seems to happen frequently at Rice–and finding that half the people were wearing that same t-shirt in her math class the next day.
