are respect and disdain mutually exclusive?

food for thought

what of (slight) respect and disdain?

or

(slight disdain) and some respect?

No. It is perfectly possible to respect people in some ways but not in others, or to generally like someone but abhor his “tragic flaw.” (Think of the great Greek heroes of legend who fell from the sky due to overarching hubris.) People are not one-dimensional characters.

i agree…

lol I hate it when someone beats me to something like this and then I just end up saying: I agree, or, that’s right!

yes, that’s true. but there are some adjectives that imply some sort of universal feeling for some person that leaves out any positive feelings for such person.

Think of the word “contempt” for example. It’s a lot stronger than disdain.

My post was actually merely an exercise in the connotative meanings of certain words

or “he has no redeeming qualities”
