Planning to do CS
International student from Japan. Indian citizenship, but lived in Japan my whole life.
3.9W GPA
1380 SAT
Above average ECs for sure. Most are tech focused along w/ Varsity sport for 2 yrs
Can pay full cost (No financial aid for me)
For RIT, Niche puts me at a 74% chance of getting in based on my gpa and major (see the acceptance by major chart for RIT)
I would be at 75 percentile since im above the average SAT range (1190-1380)
For Rochester, Niche puts me at 48% above those admitted previously for CS (see the acceptance by major chart for uni Rochester)
I would be around 50% percentile since i’m above the average SAT range (1300-1490)
HOWEVER, I frequently find out that specific colleges have different SAT scores of previously admitted students. I couldn’t find anything specific on SAT breakdown per department/major/school so any info on that?
@b1c497a thank you for this information. I wish SAT score guidelines online were able to give college specific. How do you find stats like this on college websites? I tried looking for rochester university, etc and got nothing.

This site that was recommended to me to find SAT scores for engineering majors at colleges since they are usually higher than what the college generally states.
It puts me near 75th percentile contrary to what is shown in the PDF. I’m going to trust the PDF because it comes directly from RIT and I don’t know the source of info from ASEE and believe they have mashed together all the SAT scores in engineering. We only used data that came directly from the school and took the rest with a grain of salt.
Be aware that CS and engineering are often in different departments so the data for engineering may not translate to CS. For example, my D’s college has CS in the College of Science and CSEE in engineering. They are two different majors with very different admit rates and structures. For CSEE in engineering, students do the first year engineering curriculum and then transition to major which is a competitive GPA driven process. CS in CoS is direct admit. Engineering admission was around 37% but CS was under 20%. I’m not sure if the above website breaks that out.
I agree that RIT is a Target school for you. URochester is a reach school for most anyone. A lot of the overall non selective Catholic schools are also considerations. Check out Stevens Institute too. Clark, Worchester also possibilities. That you are not going to need financial aid makes things a lot more possible. Most US schools are need aware for international students. You cannot even get into the country for college without a plan for how you are going to pay for it and your support when you apply for your student visa. So there is no sense accepting someone that needs money and the school is not going to give it
U Roch is a reach due to low acceptance rate (29% for class of 2022).
Middle 50 percentiles SAT EBRW 640-710, math 680-790 for enrolled students class of 2022. (Caveat, U Roch is test-optional, and I have not looked at whether this data represents the entire class.)
U Rochester does not publish composite SAT averages. Please do not use third-party sites for this data, which are virtually always inaccurate and outdated.

put me in 50 percentile. Where is the information that URochester is a reach? I know my source is not the only source, but I’m just curious out of the blue hearing “URochester is a reach school for most anyone”. I’ve been told several times it is a target for me, so am interested to hear more.
@momofsenior1 That makes sense. And yes, this site is only looking at engineering. If you know any sites similar to this for CS (http://profiles.asee.org) then please do let me know. Otherwise, I’ll basically take the scores from this site and generalize that CS is a little harder (Does that sound good?)
For example,
Case Western has 1420 average SAT for Engineering. For CS I can assume 1440 or sth?
There is no hard and fast rule here and it probably depends on the school.
There is essentially no difference between a 1420 and 1440. Both would convert to the same ACT score. Personally I would assume CS to have at least a 50 point higher average.
IMO, you are always better off underestimating your chances than overestimating when creating your list. If you underestimate, you’ll hopefully have pleasant surprises and some extra acceptances. Over shoot and you could be shut out everywhere.
And please remember, that as an international applicant, the overall acceptance rate is going to be less than half of what it is for domestic students.
Based on my current circumstances (and these colleges need to be in East Coast, West Coast, or Great Lakes and preferably private over public but i’d like to hear it all out)
