Are scarves on their way out?

^^Doesn’t that get a little click-noisy?

I think scarves have retreated from their peak as a fad but are still around, especially in cold weather. They’re in the stores, but I’m seeing them on clearance more so than a couple of years ago.

“Doesn’t that get a little click-noisy?”

She never mentioned anyone ever complaining.

Taking notes on a laptop is much noisier than knitting. I doubt anyone would have been bothered.

I got a sweater for Christmas that is a color that I don’t usually go for ( sort of mustard color ) I just ordered a scarf to go with it because I think it needs a little something else. I have several scarves ranging from long flowy patterns that can be worn may ways to some warm wooly ones I have collected in my travels .
Are they going " out " ?
Not in my wardrobe, not that I am exactly a fashionista

One of my best outfits is black slacks, a black cashmere turtleneck (that I got from Goodwill  ) and a scarf.

“Taking notes on a laptop is much noisier than knitting. I doubt anyone would have been bothered.”

I considered this, but find myself curious about the knitting as well. I think that for me the repetitive moving of the elbows/forearm, the turning of the yarn(s), and the clicking might combine to form a whole moment that was bothersome. Not the biggest deal, just a question.

I think scarves are great for adding a splash of color and warmth to an outfit. I live in HI, so rarely wear them here but still have a sizable collection that I use for travel–wool, silk, and others.

I don’t care much about scarves, but I had to post to say I really like your picture, @conmama. Cinque Terra?

@busdriver11 …yes, i believe it I’d. It’s a portion of the puzzle we were working on last week. It’s so pretty I hate yo break it up, so I’m just leaving it for a bit…took a picture.

@VeryHappy I love to find cashmere sweaters in the men’s section of goodwill. I buy them as big as I can find them, and I run them through the washer/dryer to shrink them, then I wear them in the painting studio at school (which is always FREEZING!) There is nothing warmer or softer in the world, and I don’t feel bad when I get paint on them.

I think scarves are a wardrobe staple, like shoes. The iterations may change, but I doubt people will ever decide that they’re never going to wear them again because they perform a useful function.

At a small LAC, with small classes, a professor might not take kindly to some one knitting in class. Seems rude.

For better or worse (both actually) men are less impacted by momentary fashions in our clothing choices and, as such, it’s difficult for me to wrap my head around the idea of making the conscious choice to NOT wear an article of clothing that I LOVE.

Which makes we wonder, who is it that dictates these fashion trends? Are they organic and driven by consumers, or are they imposed top down by the fashion industry?

I say, either way, screw 'em! Wear whatever you want.

I love fashion and actually owned a clothing store years ago. Things go in and out of fashion. Sure, I can wear whatever I want. I don’t let fashion dictate what I wear if it doesn’t look good on me, but do enjoy keeping up with what’s in style at the moment and being part of that. The majority of my wardrobe is classic styles. Would you wear big shoulder pads now because you like them?

Ha, shoulder pads! Gotta love those. Not gonna wear them ever again though!

Early in my career I was wearing suits to work every day and wide ties were the thing. I thought they looked clownish, so I went to thrift stores and bought scores of old narrow ties and wore those. Sure, it was a little odd but it made me comfortable and nobody seemed to care.

I always thought oversized shoulder pads on women were similarly clownish, so I have a hard time answering your question. The better question for me would be, would I succumb to the large shoulder pad fashion when I thought it was silly?

I wouldn’t have.

Further, the analogy fails, as one can’t really characterize scarves as a fad.

One other question: To the extent fashion trends are driven by the fashion industry, is it men or women pulling the strings?

Okay, two mentions of cashmere items from Goodwill. On my way…
