Are summer programs worth it?

Ok, so here’s my situation:

I applied for two programs so far, one is a gov school type program I was nominated for and the other is through the USNA. Both programs are free/low tuition.

However, both programs are also very selective and realistically, if I want to attend a summer program, I should also have some backups. My parents do not want to pay for a summer program, so I would have to step up and offer my savings for one.

If I didn’t do a summer program, I would pursue my normal summer routine: swimming, holding down 3 jobs, and hospital volunteering. Is it worth it that I consider paying for a summer program? Or is it equally appealing to colleges that I find time to work, play sports, and volunteer during my summer?

Although I would love the experience of a summer program, I am trying to be realistic.

For USNA, it is definitely worthwhile to try to at least apply for the summer program. Do it soon, because the window will close quickly. You can decide later whether to attend. By the way, 50% of people who attend the summer session end up going to the Academy.

The summer program at USNA will give you the best idea of whether you actually want to attend the Academy.

All of those other activities will look good on any application. You cannot do everything. So you have to determine your priorities.

If you decide not to do a program (which is understandable given your situation), look into also taking a MOOC or online class of some kind in an area you want to learn more about, something maybe that isn’t offered at your school or that you can’t fit into your schedule.

@NROTCgrad where can I learn about the USNA program?

Go to the Naval Academy website. http://www.usna.edu

I think it’s definitely worth it. You’ll gain some valuable experience.
