I understand the odds of getting into one are slim to none, but are they worth applying to anyways?

Yes [10 char]

If you think you’d do well there. There’s not much point in applying to any school you don’t want to attend, regardless of brand power.

Of course silly. if that’s not what you want don’t apply. but if that IS what you want but you’re scared of failure that’s just wrong.

you can’t achieve great things without sometimes taking great risk. and it really isn’t a major risk anyway because you have nothing to lose

^^What he said.

It doesn’t hurt to try. You might just be lucky and slip through the small window of fate.

Im a girl >.<

It depends. If you have a good reason to believe you may beat the odds by all means go for it. If you have low stats and for you a super reach is a school that accepts over 40% you may as well try then too. And if you can afford to pay in full and the super reach is a private college that takes more than 40% by all means apply.

But if we’re talking HYPS and your stats are not close (under 2100 SAT and not in top 10%) and you have no hook, it’s probably a waste of time and money. The time spent on those supplements would be better spent demonstrating real interest for a school where you stand a chance.

If doesn’t hurt to try, the worst that happen is you paid the money to apply. But you need to think why you are applying to that school. If it is school with a much higher SAT/GPA average for admitted student, then it may be a hard change of pace for you to adjust to. One of my friend’s ex-bf went to a top LAC b.c of sports, but then he has to spend so much extra time on assigments then all of his peers, and gets frustrated and can’t do much social activities. Spending all your time on work, and flirting with bad grades, will suck even if it’s your dream school.

I don’t think it’s worth it. Even if you get in, the likelihood that you’ll succeed there is quite low…even the chances of you choosing to go there are low. I say don’t waste your time/money.

Go for it! You have nothing to lose. Once you are in it’s gets easier. Check out the schools profiles to see how many they accepted with stats in the bottom 25% of their pool. Remember…you only need to be in the bottom 1% to get admitted!!!

yes you should take the chance. My guidance counselor and parents caused me to shoot too low (i got into 9 of 10 of my colleges) and i really regret it. remember to balance your list with good matches and safeties

Also remember that nearly half the class at most colleges has a hook, so chances of being admitted with stats at or below the 25th percentile are unlikely if you don’t have one.

People seem to ignore the fact that there is finite time to get apps done well. There is a lot to be said for using that time on realistic schools.

My daughter applied to graduate schools this year and applied to Harvard, fully expecting to be rejected in light of the selectivity statistics. She got in with a full scholarship. She was shocked. You never know.
